W123
The most reliable car ever built. 2.7 million produced. Still used as taxis across Africa and the Middle East decades after production ended. The W123 established Mercedes-Benz's global reputation for indestructible engineering.
History
The W123 succeeded the legendary W114/W115 and exceeded every expectation for durability. The combination of over-engineered mechanicals, thick paint, comprehensive rust protection, and simple but effective diesel engines created vehicles that regularly exceeded 500,000 km without major repair.
The diesel variants (200D, 240D, 300D) became the backbone of taxi fleets worldwide. In Casablanca, Addis Ababa, and Beirut, W123 taxis accumulated millions of kilometers. The OM617 five-cylinder diesel in the 300D was virtually indestructible.
The estate (T-model) was equally legendary, offering the same reliability with more space. The coupe (C123) added pillarless elegance. All shared the same fundamental engineering excellence.
2,697,000 W123s were produced across sedan, estate, coupe, and long-wheelbase variants. It was the best-selling Mercedes model until the W124 surpassed it. Clean examples now command EUR 15,000 to EUR 40,000, with exceptional 300TD estates exceeding EUR 50,000.
