The VW-Porsche collaboration that made mid-engine sports cars affordable. The 914/6 used the 911T's flat-six engine in a targa-bodied mid-engine chassis, creating a car that handled better than any Porsche except the 906 race car.

History

Volkswagen and Porsche jointly developed the 914 as a replacement for both the VW Karmann Ghia and the Porsche 912. The standard 914 used VW flat-four engines; the 914/6 used the Porsche 911T's 2.0-liter flat-six.

The mid-engine layout gave the 914/6 handling characteristics that the 911 couldn't match. With the engine behind the cockpit and ahead of the rear axle, the car had neutral balance and none of the 911's rear-engine weight transfer quirks.

The targa roof was removable and stored in the rear trunk. The car offered two trunks (front and rear), making it one of the most practical sports cars available.

A 914/6 GT finished sixth overall at Le Mans in 1970, an extraordinary result for a car derived from a mid-priced sports car.

3,360 914/6s were built before Porsche discontinued it in favor of the cheaper four-cylinder models. The 914/6 was the affordable mid-engine Porsche that predated the Boxster by 27 years.

Values range from EUR 60,000 to EUR 120,000.
