The yellow brick. Volvo's first true performance car. The turbocharged five-cylinder produced 240 PS and a distinctive warble. Available only in Cream Yellow initially, creating instant icon status. The estate version raced in the BTCC, becoming one of the most unexpected touring cars in history.

History

The T-5R was Volvo's answer to a question nobody asked: can a Swedish estate car be exciting? Peter Horbury's subtle aerodynamic additions, combined with a remapped turbo five-cylinder producing 240 PS, created a car that could embarrass sports sedans.

The original launch color was Cream Yellow, chosen specifically to stand out. Later production included dark green and black, but the yellow T-5R became the definitive version.

Tom Walkinshaw Racing entered the 850 Estate in the 1994 British Touring Car Championship, creating one of the most memorable images in motorsport: a Volvo estate car sliding sideways through corners alongside BMW M3s and Vauxhall Cavaliers.

5,917 T-5Rs were built in sedan and estate forms. The car proved that Volvo could build something with genuine performance character without abandoning its safety-first identity.

Yellow T-5R estates now command EUR 20,000 to EUR 40,000.
