What makes it iconic
An aluminum-bodied city car that weighed under 900 kg. The A2 was a commercial failure but an engineering triumph — years ahead of the efficiency obsession that followed.
History
The A2's Audi Space Frame was built entirely from aluminum, making it one of the lightest cars in its class. The 3L TDI version achieved 78 mpg, a figure most cars still can't match two decades later. Too expensive to build profitably, Audi discontinued it — but the lessons informed every aluminum Audi since.
