155 V6 TI V6 TI
The 155 V6 TI was Alfa Romeo's triumphant return to touring car racing, dominating the 1993 DTM season with Nicola Larini. Its combination of a Busso V6 engine and aggressive aerodynamics made it one of the most celebrated competition sedans of the 1990s.
History
The Alfa Romeo 155 was introduced in 1992 as a replacement for the aging 75, marking a significant shift in Alfa Romeo's design philosophy toward front-wheel drive platforms shared with Fiat. The car was penned by I.DE.A Institute, the Turin-based design consultancy, and while the standard 155 was a competent if somewhat conventional sports sedan, the V6 TI version represented something far more ambitious. Powered by Alfa Romeo's legendary 2.5-liter Busso V6 engine producing around 190 horsepower in road-going form, the V6 TI combined genuine performance with the kind of driver engagement that Alfisti had come to expect.
The 155's greatest claim to fame came on the racetrack. In 1993, Alfa Corse entered the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) with a radically modified version of the 155, featuring a 2.5-liter V6 producing over 420 horsepower, four-wheel drive, and dramatic aerodynamic modifications designed in collaboration with Dallara. Against the dominant Mercedes-Benz and BMW teams, the 155 V6 TI proved devastatingly effective. Nicola Larini won the championship that year, claiming 11 victories and giving Alfa Romeo one of its most celebrated modern racing triumphs. Alessandro Nannini, the former Formula One driver, also competed as Larini's teammate, adding star power to an already compelling campaign.
The success in DTM was not an isolated achievement. The 155 also competed in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), the Italian Superturismo Championship, and the Spanish Touring Car Championship, winning titles across multiple series. The road car benefited enormously from this racing pedigree, with the V6 TI becoming a sought-after performance variant. The Q4 all-wheel-drive version, which used a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, also drew directly from the motorsport program and offered remarkable traction and handling for its era.
Today, the 155 V6 TI occupies an interesting position in the collector market. For years overshadowed by more glamorous Alfa Romeos, values have been climbing steadily as enthusiasts recognize its motorsport significance and the sublime character of the Busso V6 engine. Clean, well-documented examples of the V6 TI are increasingly difficult to find, particularly in markets outside Italy, making surviving cars especially prized. The 155's DTM legacy ensures it will always hold a special place in Alfa Romeo's rich competition history.
