Giulia Quadrifoglio
The Giulia Quadrifoglio marked Alfa Romeo's triumphant return to rear-wheel-drive sport sedans, featuring a Ferrari-derived 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 510 horsepower. It set a Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record for production sedans and re-established Alfa Romeo as a genuine competitor to BMW M and Mercedes-AMG.
History
The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, introduced in 2016, represented nothing less than the rebirth of Alfa Romeo as a serious performance car manufacturer. After years of producing competent but unremarkable front-wheel-drive cars based on Fiat platforms, Alfa Romeo developed an entirely new rear-wheel-drive architecture — the Giorgio platform — specifically for the Giulia and the Stelvio SUV that followed. The Quadrifoglio, the range-topping performance version, was the car that announced Alfa Romeo's intentions to the world, and it did so with devastating effectiveness.
At the heart of the Quadrifoglio is a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that was developed with significant input from Ferrari. Producing 510 horsepower and 600 Nm of torque, the engine features a 90-degree architecture, aluminum construction, and a pair of turbochargers that provide rapid response and a powerband that stretches to the redline. The engine is mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels through a mechanical limited-slip differential. The result is extraordinary performance: 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 307 km/h, figures that put the Quadrifoglio squarely in BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63 territory.
The Giulia Quadrifoglio's chassis is equally impressive. Extensive use of aluminum and carbon fiber in the body structure keeps weight to a minimum, while the suspension — double wishbones at the front and a multilink arrangement at the rear — provides exceptional body control without sacrificing ride quality. The car features an active aero splitter at the front and a torque vectoring system that uses the rear differential and selective brake application to sharpen turn-in and enhance stability. In 2016, the Quadrifoglio set a lap record for production sedans at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, completing the 20.8 km circuit in 7 minutes and 32 seconds — a statement of intent that no one could ignore.
The Quadrifoglio has been continuously refined since its introduction, with updates to the infotainment system, chassis tuning, and available equipment. Special editions such as the NRING, inspired by the Nurburgring record, and the GTA and GTAm track-focused variants introduced in 2020, have expanded the range and cemented the car's reputation. The GTA and GTAm versions feature additional power (540 hp), extensive carbon fiber bodywork, and weight reduction measures that make them among the most focused sport sedans ever produced. The Giulia Quadrifoglio has proven that Alfa Romeo can compete at the highest level of the sport sedan segment, earning praise from enthusiasts and automotive journalists worldwide.
