The Audi A6 C5 introduced a fully galvanized body, advanced multi-link suspension, and the iconic allroad quattro variant that created the luxury crossover concept. Its clean design and exceptional build quality helped Audi close the gap with BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the executive segment.
History
The Audi A6 C5, produced from 1997 to 2004, was a decisive step in Audi's ongoing quest to establish itself as a true peer of BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the executive car segment. Designed by Peter Schreyer, the C5 A6 featured a clean, elegant design that prioritized visual coherence and aerodynamic efficiency, achieving a drag coefficient of just 0.28 — among the best in its class at the time.
The C5 was built on a sophisticated platform featuring a fully galvanized body (with Audi's 12-year anti-corrosion warranty) and a four-link front suspension combined with a trapezoidal-link rear setup. This suspension design, more complex and expensive than the MacPherson strut arrangements used by most competitors, provided excellent ride quality and handling precision. The quattro all-wheel-drive system was available across much of the range, and the optional Tiptronic automatic transmission was one of the smoothest units available in its era.
The C5 generation introduced the groundbreaking allroad quattro variant in 1999, which combined the A6 Avant's practicality with raised ride height, adjustable air suspension, and rugged body cladding. This model effectively created the luxury soft-roader category that would later be filled by vehicles like the Volvo V60 Cross Country and Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain. The performance-oriented RS6, powered by a 4.2-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 450 horsepower, was one of the most powerful production wagons and sedans in the world.
With over 1.57 million units sold, the C5 A6 was a significant commercial success and played a crucial role in Audi's continued upmarket trajectory. Its reputation for build quality and durability was particularly strong, with the galvanized body and robust mechanicals ensuring that many examples have survived in excellent condition. The C5 era represented a period of rapid brand growth for Audi, and the A6 was a key pillar of this expansion, attracting conquest buyers from BMW and Mercedes-Benz with its combination of sophistication, technology, and the quattro system's all-weather capability.
