AMG GT R
The AMG GT R was Mercedes-AMG's most extreme road car when launched, developed with extensive input from the Formula One team. Its 'Beast of the Green Hell' nickname, earned by setting a production car lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, cemented its status as a genuine supercar rival.
History
The Mercedes-AMG GT R was unveiled in 2016 at the Brooklands motor racing circuit in the UK, where Lewis Hamilton drove it in its signature green paint. Developed under the direction of AMG chief Tobias Moers, the GT R was designed to bridge the gap between the standard AMG GT and a purpose-built race car. Its development involved extensive testing at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, where it earned its 'Beast of the Green Hell' nickname by setting a blistering lap time of 7:10.92 for a rear-wheel-drive production car.
The GT R's 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged M178 V8 was tuned to produce 585 hp and 700 Nm of torque, up from 503 hp in the standard AMG GT S. Beyond the power increase, the GT R received a comprehensively reworked chassis. Active rear-wheel steering reduced the turning circle at low speeds and improved stability at high speeds. A manually adjustable coilover suspension replaced the standard air springs, while an adjustable carbon fiber front splitter and large rear wing provided significant downforce. The active aerodynamic system included adjustable underbody panels that could modify rear downforce on the move.
The carbon fiber components were extensive: the front fenders, roof panel, and many interior elements used the lightweight material. The exhaust system was revised for both reduced weight and a more aggressive sound. A nine-stage traction control system, derived from AMG's GT3 racing program, allowed drivers to precisely dial in the level of electronic intervention. The transmission was a seven-speed dual-clutch unit with revised ratios for the GT R application.
The AMG GT R established Mercedes-AMG as a manufacturer of cars capable of competing with the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and McLaren 675LT on the track. Its Nurburgring lap record demonstrated genuine performance credentials beyond marketing hyperbole. Production was limited, and the car has maintained strong values in the secondary market. A GT R Pro variant followed in 2019 with even more aggressive track-focused modifications, further establishing the AMG GT as a legitimate performance platform.
