W126 560 SEL
The 560 SEL was the ultimate long-wheelbase variant of the W126 S-Class, offering the largest engine option in Mercedes' most prestigious sedan. It represented the zenith of 1980s luxury motoring and is widely regarded as the finest S-Class generation ever produced.
History
The Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL was introduced in 1985 as the flagship of the W126 S-Class range, which had debuted in 1979. The W126 was Bruno Sacco's masterpiece, a car that defined luxury automotive design for a generation with its clean, aerodynamic lines and unmistakable presence. The 560 SEL combined the longest wheelbase body with the most powerful engine, creating the definitive configuration for those who demanded the ultimate in Mercedes luxury and performance.
The M117 5.6-liter V8 produced 300 hp in European catalyzed form (279 hp in US specification), providing effortless acceleration despite the car's considerable weight. The engine featured Bosch KE-Jetronic continuous fuel injection and drove through a four-speed automatic transmission. The W126's chassis innovations included a sophisticated self-leveling hydropneumatic rear suspension, double-wishbone front suspension with anti-dive geometry, and a recirculating ball steering system with speed-sensitive power assistance. The extended wheelbase provided 100mm of additional rear legroom compared to the standard SEL.
The W126 S-Class set new standards for safety, comfort, and durability in the luxury segment. It was the first production car to feature a driver's airbag (1981 model year), and its crumple zones, reinforced cabin structure, and seat belt pretensioners represented the state of the art in passive safety. Interior quality was exceptional, with materials selected and assembled to standards that many consider superior to modern Mercedes models. The 560 SEL's rear compartment, with its deep seats, abundant space, and refined ambiance, remains one of the most comfortable automotive environments ever created.
The W126 S-Class is consistently rated as the finest generation of S-Class by enthusiasts and automotive journalists. The 560 SEL, as the range-topping model, has become increasingly collectible as appreciation for the W126's build quality, design integrity, and engineering excellence grows. Low-mileage examples in original condition command strong premiums. The car represents a period when Mercedes-Benz invested lavishly in materials and engineering without constraint from modern cost-cutting pressures.
