Engineering first
The first BMW SUV — or as BMW insisted, the first 'Sports Activity Vehicle.' The X5 proved that a tall vehicle could handle like a car and launched a segment BMW now dominates.
History
BMW resisted calling the X5 an SUV, insisting it was engineered for on-road dynamics first. Frank Stephenson's design was proportionally aggressive, and the double-wishbone front suspension delivered on the handling promise.
