Motorsport legend

The CLK 63 AMG Black Series was the first AMG Black Series model, establishing a formula of extreme weight reduction, widened bodywork, and track-focused engineering that would define AMG's most exclusive products. It set the template for the SL, C63, and SLS Black Series that followed.

History

The Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series was unveiled in 2007 as the first product of AMG's new Black Series sub-brand, a concept that would produce the most extreme road-legal versions of AMG models. The idea was to take an existing AMG car and strip it of luxury, add power, widen the body for larger tires, and tune the chassis for track performance. The CLK was the perfect starting point: its two-door coupe body was compact and relatively light, and the M156 6.2-liter V8 had significant untapped potential.

The Black Series transformation was comprehensive. The M156 V8 was tuned to produce 507 hp (up from 481 hp in the standard CLK 63) through revised intake and exhaust systems, reprogrammed engine management, and a higher rev limit. The bodywork was dramatically widened with bolt-on fender flares accommodating wider 255/35 ZR19 front and 285/30 ZR19 rear tires. The rear seats were deleted to save weight and improve structural rigidity, and a carbon fiber front splitter and rear spoiler provided genuine aerodynamic benefit. The suspension was completely revised with adjustable coilover dampers, stiffer anti-roll bars, and revised geometry.

The driving experience was transformative compared to the standard CLK 63 AMG. The wider track and aggressive tire sizing gave the car vastly improved grip and turn-in response, while the stiffened chassis and deletion of comfort-oriented features like the air suspension created a much more connected feel. The naturally aspirated V8's response was immediate and its exhaust note, through the side-exit pipes, was visceral. The car was genuinely competitive on track while remaining usable on the road, though the ride quality was noticeably firmer than any other Mercedes of the era.

With approximately 700 units produced, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series established the formula that all subsequent Black Series cars would follow. It has become the most collectible CLK variant and one of the most sought-after modern AMG models. Values have appreciated substantially as collectors recognize it as the genesis of the Black Series concept. The combination of the naturally aspirated V8, widebody aesthetics, and limited production makes it a cornerstone of any serious AMG collection.
