Motorsport legend

The CLK DTM AMG was a limited-production road car celebrating Mercedes' DTM touring car dominance. With just 100 coupes and 80 cabriolets built, it combined a supercharged V8 with race-inspired bodywork to create one of the most extreme road-legal Mercedes ever produced.

History

The Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG was created in 2004 to celebrate Mercedes' extraordinary success in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) championship. The road car was a homage to the CLK DTM race car driven by Bernd Schneider to the 2003 DTM championship title. Unlike typical celebratory editions that merely add visual touches, the CLK DTM AMG was a comprehensively re-engineered machine that went far beyond a standard CLK 55 AMG in every dimension of performance.

The heart of the CLK DTM was AMG's hand-built M113 5.4-liter V8 fitted with an Eaton supercharger, producing 582 hp and 800 Nm of torque, a staggering output for 2004. Power was delivered through a five-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission to the rear wheels. The bodywork was extensively modified with a carbon fiber front splitter, widened wheel arches, side skirts, and a large rear wing derived from the DTM race car's aerodynamic package. The body modifications were not merely cosmetic; the aerodynamic elements generated genuine downforce at high speeds.

The chassis was significantly upgraded with a lowered and stiffened suspension featuring adjustable coilover dampers, larger brakes, and forged alloy wheels wrapped in wide performance tires. The interior was stripped of unnecessary weight while retaining key luxury elements, featuring carbon fiber trim, Alcantara upholstery, and fixed-back racing buckets. The result was a car that could lap circuits at astonishing speed while remaining road-legal, with a top speed of 320 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of just 3.9 seconds.

Only 100 coupes were produced, followed by 80 cabriolet versions. The CLK DTM AMG represented the most extreme production Mercedes of its era and remains one of the rarest and most collectible modern AMG models. Its combination of supercharged V8 power, race-derived bodywork, and extreme exclusivity has driven values to the highest levels among early 2000s Mercedes models. The car bridged the gap between AMG's road car program and Mercedes' successful motorsport efforts, a concept that would later evolve into the AMG GT and AMG ONE.
