6C 2500 Competizione
The 6C 2500 Competizione was Alfa Romeo's premier postwar competition car, achieving legendary status at the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. Built in tiny numbers with bespoke coachwork, it represents the pinnacle of immediate postwar Italian racing car design.
History
The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Competizione emerged in the immediate aftermath of World War II as Alfa Romeo sought to re-establish its prewar dominance in motorsport. Based on the 6C 2500 chassis that had been introduced in 1939, the Competizione version featured a heavily modified version of the 2,443cc inline-six engine with triple Weber carburetors, producing approximately 145 horsepower — a substantial increase over the standard road car. The engine benefited from a higher compression ratio, revised camshaft profiles, and careful tuning that extracted remarkable performance from this prewar design.
The Competizione cars were built in extraordinarily small numbers — approximately 24 examples — and each received bespoke lightweight coachwork from Italy's finest carrozzerie. Touring Superleggera, using their patented superlight tubular frame construction method, bodied many of the most celebrated examples, creating flowing, aerodynamic forms that were both beautiful and functional. Colli, another respected Milanese coachbuilder, also produced bodies for several chassis. The diversity of coachwork means that no two 6C 2500 Competizione cars are identical, each representing a unique collaboration between Alfa Romeo's engineering and the artistry of the coachbuilder.
On the racetrack, the 6C 2500 Competizione achieved remarkable success in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The car competed with distinction in the Mille Miglia, the grueling 1,000-mile open-road race through Italy, as well as the Targa Florio in Sicily and numerous hill climbs and circuit races throughout Europe. Notable drivers including Juan Manuel Fangio, Consalvo Sanesi, and Franco Rol piloted these cars to victory, establishing records and adding to Alfa Romeo's already formidable competition palmares. The Competizione represented a bridge between Alfa Romeo's glorious prewar racing heritage and the all-conquering Tipo 158/159 Alfetta that would dominate the early years of the Formula One World Championship.
Today, the 6C 2500 Competizione is among the most valuable and sought-after of all postwar Alfa Romeos. The combination of extreme rarity, documented competition history, exquisite coachbuilt bodywork, and the Alfa Romeo name creates extraordinary demand among the world's most discerning collectors. These cars are regular participants and class winners at the most prestigious concours d'elegance events, including Pebble Beach, Villa d'Este, and the Concorso d'Eleganza at Lake Como. Values reflect this stature, with the finest examples commanding prices well into the millions of euros.
