The naturally balanced inline-six is the purist's engine. Its inherent smoothness comes from physics: perfect primary and secondary balance without counterweights. BMW built a dynasty around this layout, from the M20 to the B58. Jaguar's XK engine ran for decades. The inline-six revs freely, sounds magnificent, and delivers power with a linearity that turbos have struggled to replicate.
