What makes it iconic

The BMW E34 5 Series represented a quantum leap in quality, technology, and refinement for the mid-size executive segment. It was the first 5 Series offered with all-wheel drive and the Touring (wagon) body style, while its M5 variant raised the bar for high-performance sedans with its hand-built S38 engine.

History

The BMW E34 5 Series, launched in 1988, was one of the most thoroughly engineered cars of its era and represented BMW's determination to set new standards in the executive sedan segment. Styled by Ercole Spada at Italdesign with final development by BMW's in-house team under Claus Luthe, the E34 was more aerodynamic, more spacious, and substantially more refined than the E28 it replaced.

The E34 was the first 5 Series to offer a Touring (estate) variant, expanding the model's appeal to buyers who needed cargo capacity without sacrificing driving dynamics. It was also the first 5 Series available with all-wheel drive (525ix), anticipating the growing demand for AWD in the luxury segment. Engine options ranged from economical four-cylinder diesels to the magnificent 3.8-liter S38B38 inline-six in the later M5, which produced 340 horsepower and remains one of the finest naturally aspirated engines BMW ever built.

The E34 M5 deserves special mention as one of the great performance sedans of all time. Available in both sedan and Touring body styles (the latter being exceptionally rare), the M5 combined its motorsport-derived engine with a sophisticated chassis that could devour autobahn miles while still engaging the driver on winding mountain roads. The later 3.8-liter version, introduced in 1992, is particularly prized for its increased displacement, revised camshaft profiles, and improved low-end torque.

With over 1.33 million units produced, the E34 was a massive commercial success and solidified the 5 Series as the benchmark in its segment. Its build quality was exceptional, with many examples surviving decades of use with remarkable integrity. The E34 era coincided with BMW's expansion into new markets and its growing reputation for engineering excellence, and the car played a significant role in establishing the brand's premium positioning. Today, the E34 is recognized as perhaps the finest all-around 5 Series ever made, with M5 and 540i variants leading appreciation in the collector market.
