Audi's first mid-engine supercar and proof that Quattro all-wheel drive belonged at the highest level of performance. The R8 made the supercar accessible without diluting its purpose.
History
The R8 grew directly from Audi's Le Mans prototype racing program — the R8 LMP that won Le Mans five times between 2000 and 2005. Frank Lamberty's design used Audi's Aluminium Space Frame technology to keep weight under 1,600 kg despite all-wheel-drive hardware. The 4.2-liter FSI V8, mounted behind the driver, produced 420 hp and could be paired with a gated six-speed manual — a rarity in the mid-engine class. The R8 proved that Audi could compete with Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini, not by imitating them, but by applying its own engineering philosophy. Tony Stark drove one in Iron Man, but the car needed no fictional endorsement.
