The BMW 850CSi was the ultimate expression of the E31 8 Series, featuring a BMW Motorsport-developed S70 V12 engine, six-speed manual transmission, and bespoke chassis tuning. With only 1,510 units produced, it remains one of the rarest and most collectible modern BMWs.

History

The BMW 850CSi, produced from 1992 to 1996, represented the pinnacle of the E31 8 Series — itself one of the most ambitious and technologically advanced cars BMW has ever created. While the standard 850i was a refined grand tourer, the 850CSi was developed by BMW Motorsport to be something more: a genuine high-performance machine that pushed the boundaries of what a GT car could achieve.

At the heart of the 850CSi was the S70B56, a 5.6-liter V12 engine developed by BMW Motorsport (the 'S' prefix denoting Motorsport origin). This engine produced 380 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque, significantly more than the standard M70 V12. It was paired exclusively with a Getrag six-speed manual transmission — a rare and significant choice in a segment dominated by automatics. The 'CSi' designation, historically reserved for BMW's most sporting models, was well earned.

The chassis received equally thorough attention from Motorsport. The 850CSi featured stiffer springs, recalibrated dampers, a lower ride height, and wider rear wheels compared to the standard car. It also received unique aerodynamic enhancements, including a deeper front spoiler and a subtle rear lip spoiler. The steering was quicker, and the brakes were upgraded with larger rotors and calipers. These changes transformed the grand touring 8 Series into something approaching a sports car while maintaining the refinement expected of a flagship BMW.

With only 1,510 units produced over four years, the 850CSi is one of the rarest production BMWs of the modern era. It was the most expensive car in BMW's lineup during its production run and represented a level of engineering investment that was difficult to justify commercially — the entire E31 program reportedly lost money for BMW. Today, the 850CSi is highly sought after by collectors, with values rising dramatically as the market recognizes it as the definitive V12 grand tourer of its generation and one of BMW Motorsport's finest creations.
