The 250 GT California Spider is one of the most desirable open-top Ferraris ever built, combining elegant Scaglietti coachwork with the legendary Colombo V12 engine. Its rarity and beauty have made it a consistent record-setter at auction, epitomizing the golden age of Italian grand touring.

History

The Ferrari 250 GT California Spider was born from a specific request by Luigi Chinetti, Ferrari's North American distributor, who recognized the demand for a stylish open-top sports car suited to the sun-drenched lifestyle of California. Enzo Ferrari approved the project, and the car debuted at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show. Built on the 250 GT platform, it used the proven Colombo V12 engine producing approximately 240 horsepower, mated to a four-speed manual gearbox.

The California Spider was produced in two series: the Long Wheelbase (LWB) version from 1957 to 1960, and the Short Wheelbase (SWB) version from 1960 to 1963. The SWB variant featured a more compact chassis, disc brakes replacing the earlier drum setup, and a slightly more powerful engine tune. Both versions were bodied by Scaglietti in Modena, with coachwork that balanced aggressive sporting lines with open-air elegance.

Despite its luxurious grand touring character, the California Spider proved itself in competition. Several examples were raced at events including the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with covered-headlight competition versions achieving notable results. The car's dual nature as both a credible racing machine and a glamorous road car set a template that Ferrari would follow for decades.

With only 106 examples built across both series, the California Spider has become one of the most coveted collector cars in existence. A 1961 SWB version sold for over $17 million at auction, and the model's association with Hollywood and the jet-set lifestyle of the late 1950s and early 1960s has cemented its cultural significance. It remains the quintessential expression of Ferrari's golden era, blending mechanical excellence with timeless Italian design.
