The 250 GT Lusso is widely regarded as the most beautiful Ferrari ever designed, representing the pinnacle of Pininfarina's collaboration with Maranello. It was the final evolution of the iconic 250 GT lineage, offering refined grand touring in an exquisitely proportioned package.

History

The Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, formally known as the 250 GT/L Berlinetta Lusso, was unveiled at the 1962 Paris Motor Show and immediately captivated the automotive world with its breathtaking design. Created as a refined grand tourer rather than a pure competition car, the Lusso (Italian for 'luxury') represented Ferrari's acknowledgment that many customers desired comfort and elegance alongside performance. Pininfarina penned the body, which was then built by Scaglietti, creating what many consider the most harmonious automotive shape of the era.

Mechanically, the Lusso utilized the Colombo V12 engine in 3.0-liter form, producing approximately 250 horsepower. It sat on a shortened version of the 250 GTE 2+2 chassis, with a live rear axle, independent front suspension, and disc brakes at all four corners. The interior was notably more refined than previous 250 models, with a large wrap-around windshield, luxurious leather upholstery, and an innovative dashboard that placed the instruments in a binnacle angled toward the driver.

The Lusso occupied a unique position in Ferrari's lineup, bridging the gap between the outgoing 250 GT SWB and the incoming 275 GTB. While not designed for racing, its lightweight construction and potent engine made it a capable performer on twisting roads. Notable owners included Steve McQueen, whose personal Lusso has become one of the most famous Ferraris in history, and numerous European aristocrats who appreciated its blend of speed and sophistication.

Production ran from late 1962 through the summer of 1964, with approximately 350 examples completed. The relatively short production run and the car's stunning aesthetics have ensured strong collector interest. The Lusso marked the elegant conclusion of the 250 GT series, a lineage that had defined Ferrari throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s. Today it is celebrated not just as a great Ferrari, but as one of the most beautiful automobiles ever created, a masterwork of proportion and restraint.
